The Business of Golf

We know many young golfers who hang around Golf Clubs long enough might eventually think to themselves…

Hey, the people who work here seem to have a lot of fun and enjoy their jobs, I wonder what it would be like to do this for a living?

Well, the people here at G4G are here to say – you’re right - we do have fun and we’ve all had long successful careers because of the game and business of Golf!

Here are some fun big numbers to be grateful for – we’ll talk North America as a whole.  The game of golf is played by roughly 1 of every 7 people with a footprint (activity) in golf courses, retail, construction, tourism, real estate, and charity.) National Golf Foundation – 2022 study.

What does this mean:

  • $101.7 Billion in direct impact to the economy

  • It enables 1.65 million jobs

  • More than 1 million employees directly tied to the golf industry

  • Charitable impacts – dollars raised from golf activities was about $4.6 Billion dollars!!!

Golf is good for people and for the planet – it’s healthy, social, and great for mental health elevating the quality of life for communities they exist in.   Think of all the valuable green space golf courses provide to the planet – grass and trees providing oxygen and trapping pollutants!  These are also sanctuaries for countless species of animals.

There are so many different career paths out there it would be impossible to list them all, especially if we went outside direct careers!

Interested in a career in Clubs? Here are a few helpful links to help you navigate this vast landscape!

  • NGCOA (National Golf Course Owners Association) www.ngcoa.ca – this is more the public space and was founded by Golf Course Owners who wanted to share information and best practices to be better operators as well as have a buying group.

  • www.AFAA.com – Athletics and Fitness Association of America – (there are many others for aquatics and fitness) as these activities have become a large part of the Club world as well – there are many associations here as well
